How can we ever achieve peace in the world when no one is acting like the grown up? Adults making big decisions is an absurd comedy set in a world governed by children - in adult bodies.
PREMISE
All lines in the script are direct quotes from interviews with children aged 5–8, discussing politics, power, war, and peace. Adult actors play all roles, but the dialogue and reasoning are entirely those of the children, stitched together like a dadaist collage.
SYNOPSIS
We find ourselves in a world governed by children - in adult bodies. The average mental age of the nation’s elected officials is 7 years. When Denmark declares war on Sweden, by putting up handwritten notes on lamp posts around Stockholm, the Swedish prime minister is pondering the wonders of life: were we really monkeys before becoming humans? How big is the sun? And why do we work so much? Leading the country seems to be of less importance.
While he and his ministers are busy making important decisions such as handing out pets to all the citizens, making ice cream and candy free of charge, and creating underwater glass tunnels, two overlooked civil servants are desperately trying to get the man in charge to take the threat from Denmark seriously. But reaching out to a prime minister who dreams of becoming an astronaut and wishes every day were Friday is easier said than done, especially when that same person has the power to fly a drone into anyone’s hair or shit in anyone’s face (literally). More importantly: what does peace even look like? Killing all the bad people? Putting the Danish prime minister’s head on a stick? Or building an electric wall around every country in the world so no one can get either in or out?
Adults making big decisions is a political satire about the absurdity of our current time. A dadaist psychoanalysis of war, peace and adulthood, viewed through the eyes of children.
TEAM
We, the director Karin Franz Körlof and producers Hanna Hannerz Simå and Elin Bennett, previously made the multi-award-winning short film The Death of a Hero (En hjältes död). During that process, we found a fruitful collaboration that we would like to nurture, develop, and strengthen through this project, which would be our first feature-length fiction film. We also wish to continue working with several of the people who were involved in the short film.
